Contemporary Jewellery Show at Auckland Museum
Toi Kura, Applied Arts Gallery, Level One

“Te Puna Whakarākei: Jewellery as Statement
This exhibition features a range of contemporary jewellery pieces from the Museum’s applied arts collection, including work from local and international makers. These artists use jewellery as more than decoration and consider how adornment can engage with challenging conversations; protest, feminism, climate change, and more.” @aucklandmuseum

Featuring a piece from current Workshop6 jeweller Anna Wallis (featured above “Dendrochronology – Stg silver) and many other works from jewellers associated with Workshop6 such as former partners Lisa Walker and Areta Wilkinson and former students Sandra Bushby and Shelly Norton.

New Work in the Gallery

As well as having a range of jewellery from our tutors and one of our students we’ve got some new pieces from Cheryl Sills. We are open tomorrow (Saturday 20th December), 10am-4pm or contact us if there’s something you would like to view in person in the next few days.

Many Manos creeping in the window

Originating from the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, celebrated over 2000 years ago to mark the end of summer harvest and beginning of winter. The Celts believed that on the night of October 31st, the boundary berween living and dead was blurred, allowing spirits to roam the earth.

Later the Christian church established All Saint`s Day on November 1st and the night before became known as All Hallow`s Eve.

How and what do you mark on this day? If anything…

Many Manos

Many hands make light work | Know like the back of your hand | Put your hands together

Cold hands warm heart | Show of hands | Dab hand | First Hand | Hand in hand

Hands on | Heavy handed | Old hand | Out of hand | Under hand | Change hands

Hand over | Hands full | Hands tied | In safe hands | Try your hand | Hands down

Second hand | In good hands | Helping hand | On hand | Get your hands dirty

Hand over fist | On the other hand | In your hands
